The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Michael Cumpsty
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play, End of the Rainbow
"This is my first Tony nomination, [and] it feels really lovely. Many of the shows I was in were not in parts I thought I had a chance of getting nominated in. There were a couple I was hopeful for; I remember when I was doing Copenhagen, it was like every great actor in the world was doing a play in New York. There were a lot of great performances this season, as well, but I’m really delighted. I am really very happy. I love my show; I love Tracie Bennett, who is the most committed, energetic performer I have ever encountered. I’m going to be delighted to be there and watch her enjoy it as much as she’s going to. I was immediately inundated with texts, phone calls and e-mails, so I have been sitting here responding to a few of them. I got into a bit of a text conversation with [fellow nominee] Christian Borle [Cumpsty's co-star in On the Town at Encores!], who I absolutely adore. We were just goofing back and forth with each other. I am really looking forward to spending time with the other nominees and being part of the community. I love feeling like I’m part of the Broadway community, and this is sort of the cherry on the top."
